Treating Fibromyalgia with a Good Diet

By John Gardner

Every patient of fibromyalgia has an individual diet, that is unique to the person. However, a common denominator for all fibromyalgia cases is inflammation. Among the many factors affecting inflammation is the diet of the person. The problematic part is the fact that each type of food has a different effect on each person. What is inflammatory for one person may be anti-inflammatory for another.

Food Sensitivity Diet

A type of diet to consider if you have fibromyalgia is a diet based on the results of a blood test that measures the degree of inflammation in the body to certain foods and chemicals, known as mediator release testing or MRT. Of course you have to explore the various foods to create a diet that is according to MRT. Naturally the foods that are inflammatory are completely eliminated from the diet of the fibromyalgia patients. It is the intent of the doctors to reduce inflammation so that the related fibromyalgia symptoms also decrease, giving relief. Registered dietitians create specific elimination diets for their patients based on the results of blood tests, explains "Today's Dietitian."

Foods to Avoid and Include

As a first step, analyze the type of fat that is being consumed, it is a crucial aspect for reducing inflammatory foods. The Omega-3 fatty acids, are the so called good fats, and they are anti-inflammatory, especially when you compare them to foods of high saturated fat, according to the website RD411.com. Substantially reducing or eliminating trans fats and saturated fat from the diet is mandatory since these fats provoke inflammation. Some artificial sweeteners found in soft drinks such as aspartame stimulate nerve cells and should be avoided. Fibromyalgia patients, according to RD411.com, should have diets that include lots of water, fresh fruits, vegetables, probiotics and whole grain fruits. In case of inadequate intake of nutrients, it is suggested that supplements such as multi-vitamins are taken. Avoid or limit, alcohol, coffee, refined sugars and carbohydrates and high-salt foods.

A Study on Fibromyalgia and Diet.

There are researches and studies on the special dietary needs of the fibromyalgia patients. A group of 18 patients was studied over a period of 3 months, while they took restricted diet, that was high in raw vegetables and low in salt, as per the \"Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology\" in the year 2000. The participants of the research reported relief in overall pain, joint stiffness and also experienced better quality of sleep.

A Study on Vegan Diet for Fibromyalgia.

For some, a vegan diet is effective in pain reduction, as seen in a November 2000 study in the journal \"Toxicology.\" This study used a vegan diet consisting of berries, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and roots to improve fibromyalgia symptoms. The interesting part is that there was abundant consumption of calories, 1829 calories actually, broken down to 71 g protein, 276 g carbohydrate and 63 g of fat. There was not cholesterol used in the diet, while the fat was mainly unsaturated fats, with little use of saturated fats. The results were very encouraging as patients experienced less joint pains and joint stiffness. The diet was full of antioxidants, the researchers and the study feel that it was this factor that was responsible for the results.
